Eumer Tube Flies
Discover the Magic of Tube Flies
At Eumer, it's all about the river. Nestled on the west coast of Finland, the Merikarvia river is a source of livelihood, research, electricity, and pleasure. In the 1930's, the river was a popular destination for English fly fisherman who would make the long journey North to try their luck against the Salmon and Sea Trout. Today, Eumer continues the traditions that fly fisherman have enjoyed for decades.
Jaako and Olli Ojamo were lucky enough to be born and raised along the river. As young boys, they spent every possible moment there, feeding their growing passion for fishing. On the river, live bait was prohibited, so tying flies was a must for any budding fisherman. The only problem for Jaako and Olli was that they didn't have a lot of spare change to purchase as many fly components as their fishing appetites required. This is when they turned to their father, the owner of a brass plumbing component factory. His factory gave the innovative fly-fishing enthusiasts unlimited access to the equipment necessary to create their own components. The boys began creating their own uniquely shaped brass tubes that allowed them to reuse the same bodies over and over—only changing hooks as needed.
Back on the river, local and visiting fisherman quickly noticed the success the "Ojamo Boys" had with the fish. When people learned the secret of their success—their unique tubes—they always wanted to buy them. This gave the boys the spare change they had always wanted, and it allowed them to buy as many fishing components as they could ever want! As word spread, demand increased, and that is when their hobby became a full-time business.
Soon, their growing business overtook Dad's factory, and the boys needed to find their own place. Once again, the river beckoned, and they found an abandoned lumber mill, which seemed to be waiting for new life. The mill was literally built on the river, so the water that flowed underneath provided electricity to the building. Today, the mill is renovated into a complete all-inclusive fishing lodge with a full-time guide. In the adjacent building is the Eumer factory. Now, when Jaako or Olli have an idea for a new tube, they are able to create it and quickly test it outside on their beloved river.
This love of innovation, combined with constant feedback from both the fish and fishermen, is what has propelled Eumer into one of the largest tube fly companies in the world. Eumer's bold innovations have brought forth a complete line of fly fishing components, and they are revolutionizing the fly fishing world as we know it.
